Holt County Animal Shelter is a small non-profit dog shelter located in rural Nebraska. We are dedicated to providing a safe and caring environment for stray, surrendered and abandoned dogs.
We believe every dog deserves the chance to be a loved and cherished companion.
Our dedicated team is committed to making a difference in the lives of these animals while creating a positive impact in our community. We provide education, promote responsible pet ownership, and offer a clean, safe environment where people can connect with dogs and discover the joy of volunteering.

We are proud to operate as a no-kill dog shelter, where every life is valued.
Euthanasia is only considered in cases where it is necessary for an animal’s quality of life or public safety.
This safe haven is made possible through the generous financial support of our community.

How We Got Started
In 2006, a group of like-minded individuals came together to address the growing issue of stray dogs running loose in our community. At the time, dogs picked up by the O’Neill Police Department were taken to a local veterinarian’s office and held for up to five days for owner reclaim. If unclaimed, they were often euthanized.
During the early years, the shelter operated on private property in both Chambers and O’Neill. In 2013, the organization found a permanent home at 500 S. Logan in O’Neill, thanks to a generous donation of land and a building from Dennis Werner.
What began as an all-volunteer effort has grown to include a small team of paid staff, allowing us to stay open and running every day.
We are not government funded and receive no city or state support our work is entirely made possible by the generosity of public donations.

To date, we’ve found loving homes for nearly 1,000 dogs and reunited countless others with their owners.
